Young cyclists benefit from £2,000 Trent & Dove Community Grant

Young cyclists at Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, in Brough Road, Winshill, are celebrating the launch of their brand-new bike shelter thanks to a £2,000 community grant from Trent & Dove.

The school applied to our Community Grants Panel for money to provide a bike shelter supporting its initiative to teach every child to cycle and create a more sustainable future. Enabling them to cycle to school encourages an active and healthy lifestyle, and it also reduces air pollution and traffic.

The Community Grants Panel, supported by the Community Engagement Team, welcomes applications from organisations and young people that contribute to achieving our Strategic Plan aims and objectives.

It supports grants of up to £2,000 for community projects, £250 for young people under 18, and up to £750 for individuals aged 18 to 25 who live locally. It also provides lifelong learning grants of up to £750 for individuals pursuing continuous education and skill development.

Successful applicants must submit a progress report and a final report detailing the impact and outcomes of their initiatives.

Dawn Maddin, Trent & Dove's Community Manager, said: “These grants are designed to help, support, create and transform local communities. We recognise that the voluntary sector significantly contributes to the quality of life of people living and working in the areas where we provide homes.

“Our Grants Panel welcomes applications from organisations and young people whose projects support community engagement, equality, diversity and inclusion, environment, health and wellbeing and life-long learning opportunities.

“We are delighted to support Winshill Primary and Nursery School in this fantastic project to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for its pupils.”

Chris Gaffiney, Headteacher at Winshill Primary and Nursery School, said: “We are delighted to receive this support from Trent & Dove’s Community Grants Panel.

“It is really important for us to encourage a healthy lifestyle for our children. The bike shelter allows our children to safely store their bikes and encourages them to cycle to school by ensuring their bikes are safely stored away.

“We are really passionate about biking in school. We have a mountain bike club, and we teach all our children to ride bikes. Our children have also participated in a 2,000km biking challenge to encourage them to keep active.”

From June 2023 to February 2024, Trent & Dove distributed a total of £35,000 in grants across Staffordshire, benefiting various community-driven projects.
