A new life for Bargates, a fresh start for generations to come

LtoR: Ursula Bennion Cllr Mick Fitzpatrick and Claire Winfield

Tyldesley Court is the new name for the long-awaited Bargates redevelopment scheme which will provide 82 much-needed homes for older people and families in the heart of Burton-on-Trent.

The £21.3 million Trent & Dove development is named after Sir Thomas Tyldesley an English Civil War general who led a charge across Burton Bridge in 1643. Tyldesley crossed the bridge of 36 arches while under constant fire and later received a knighthood and was made a brigadier by King Charles I at Greenwich.

The scheme, which is being built by developer, Morro will consist of 72 high-quality independent living homes for older people and ten three-bed family homes all for rent. Homes England is supporting the build with grant funding via Trent & Dove’s strategic partnership with Orbit Group.

An official event was held at the site’s Meadowside Leisure Centre entrance on the High Street, yesterday (12 December) to mark this milestone.

Ursula Bennion, CEO of Trent & Dove, said:

We’re delighted to officially unveil Tyldesley Court as the new name for a new community. Getting to this point has taken lots of hard work and collaboration with our partners, Morro and Orbit and I’m grateful for their commitment and persistence. I’d like to thank East Staffordshire Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council for their support and feedback on our plans to transform homes, lives & communities for the people of Burton.

It’s hoped the scheme will directly create around 15 jobs and support the local economy through the use of local suppliers. There will also be apprenticeship opportunities for local people as part of the development and links with local schools.

Cllr Mick Fitzpatrick, Leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council , said:

I am pleased to see the Bargates development move forward and receive the official title of Tyldesley Court. The Council has offered its continued support and we are delighted to see such affordable housing being built right in the centre of Burton upon Trent. Not only will this development provide homes for local families and older people, but it will also provide a number of job opportunities in the process. I look forward to seeing the progress of Tyldesley Court and I cannot wait to see how the development will look once competed.

Charlie Riley, Development Director at Trent & Dove, added:

This scheme fulfils a real gap in the housing market in our area. There are limited opportunities for older people – many of whom have spent their entire lives in the town – to enjoy their later life in affordable homes, which also offer support as they need it.
The inclusion of ten three-bedroom family homes will create a mixed multi-generational community and the possibility of a grandparent being able to remain close to their family is something I’d like to see made reality.

Tyldesley Court is due for completion summer 2025. Residents who have a local Burton connection can register their interest for the homes by emailing: Tyldesleycourt@trentanddove.org
