Safety information about the use and storage of scooters
Trent & Dove recognises the benefits of mobility scooters and powered chairs in enabling residents to retain their independence as much as possible.
However, the safety of all residents, staff and visitors is a priority and the following guidance aims to provide some basic safety information about the use and storage of scooters.
Yes, however, you will need permission from Trent & Dove. You will need to contact your Housing Officer who will consider your circumstances and will be able to advise you accordingly. We will ask you for some information about DVLA registration (if applicable), insurance, annual servicing and electrical checks, and discuss with you suitable storage and charging locations.
You must not leave it in any communal area because of fire risk issues. This also applies to any visitors you may have who are using a scooter or other motorised mobility vehicle.
Mobility scooters and other motorised vehicles require regular charging of their batteries. Charging should take place in a dry and sheltered environment. We also recommend that you purchase a scooter with a gel-type battery.
It is strongly recommended that you take out special insurance for your scooter, in addition to Home Contents Insurance. You are likely to be recharged by Trent & Dove for any damage you cause by collisions etc.
There are two main classes of scooter:
Class 2 – designed for use on the footway with up to speeds of 4mph.
Class 3 – can be used on the footway where they are limited to 4mph and on the road where they can travel up to 8mph. They need to be registered with the DVLA.
There are many different types of scooter within these two classes. Buy your scooter from a reputable dealer who will assess your individual needs and recommend the right scooter for you.
Please note that Trent & Dove will not retain any responsibility for any purchased scooters.
